Lieutenant Maynard Henry Crawford Conybeare born in Jan 26th 1890 Muttra, Bengal, India.
Maynard was the eldest son of Henry Crawford Arthur Conybeare, barrister and retired Commissioner of the Indian Civil Service, and Amy Maxwell Brodhurst who was born in Scarbourgh, Yorkshire in 1866.
He was grandson of Henry Conybeare, an English civil engineer and Gothic revival architect who moved to India as a young man to work on the Bombay Great Eastern Railway project.
The 1911 census shows Maynard's father and mother living at Platway, Shaldon. With them are three of Maynard's siblings*, 16 year old Marion Amy who was born in Muttra, India, 9 year old Edith Alice who was born in Gorakhpur, India, and 7 year old Beryl Amy who was born in Shaldon. Also present are three servants who live-in the house with them, a nurse, a house-maid and a cook.

Lieutenant Conybeare served in the Arbor Expedition in the 114th Mahrattas, Indian Army, 1911 - 1912. This was a punitive expedition against the Abors in Assam on the North-Eastern Frontier of India following the murder of Mr Noel Williamson, who Assistant Political Officer in the districts of Sadiya and Lakhimpur).
At the outbreak of war, Lieutenant Conybeare was ordered to join the 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment but on 10th October 1914 he was invalided out and died three months later at the family home, Platway, Shaldon.
Maynard left £635 13s. 9d. to his father in his will.
He is buried in the cemetery of St Nicholas Church, Shaldon.

Mrs Conybeare lost her son Edward Bruce Conybeare when he died of wounds at Mesopotamia in 1915. Her husband then died quite suddenly just one month before the death of Maynard in 1916.
